Menstruation is a natural part of life, but for some of young women, it's a source of shame, stigma, and struggle. The Gallas Foundation is committed to empowering these women and breaking the cycle of menstrual taboos. Our recent initiative to provide sanitary pads to Mathare Slum women is a step towards ensuring that they have access to the basic necessities that are often taken for granted.
The Challenge:
Mathare Slum is one of the most vulnerable areas in Nairobi, with a significant portion of the population living in poverty. Many women in this area struggle to access basic necessities like sanitary pads, which are often seen as a luxury. As a result, many women are forced to use unhygienic alternatives, such as rags or leaves, which can lead to health complications and further perpetuate menstrual taboos.
The Solution:
The Gallas Foundation Team has partnered with local organizations to provide sanitary pads to Mathare Slum women. Our team has distributed over 1,000 pads to women in the community, providing them with a reliable and affordable means of managing their menstrual hygiene. We believe that by providing these essential products, we can help break the cycle of menstrual taboos and empower women to take control of their lives.
The Impact:
The impact of our initiative has been significant. Women in Mathare Slum are now able to manage their menstrual hygiene with dignity and confidence. They are no longer forced to use unhygienic alternatives, and they are able to participate fully in their daily lives without fear of stigma or shame.
